Because of certain words in his poem "Who Be Kind To," Italian police detained and questioned Allen for three hours after his reading at the Spoleto Festival. Here being questioned, Patrick Creagh his interpreter in the background.  July 9, 1967. c. Ettore Sottsass. licensing >>

Allen's note on back from three years later reads "Spoleto, Italy/Presenting Fleur to cop who caused my bust for Who Be Kind to / July 1967 / This Cop the previous evening as guard at Theater in Spoleto had taken Italian copy of Pivano's translations of texts included in Who Be Kind to to the public prosecutor, resulting in arrest & detainment for the evening and a prosecution which continues to this day March 11, 1970.
